The config menu, and texture bookmarks

One feature of QOOLE that is often overlooked by new users is the config menu. This tutorial will show the uses of the options menu in regular editing occaisions. Also, this will introduce the use of texture bookmarks to speed up editing.

Grid Size

When a level gets very large, or when you are working on a fiddly intricate piece of architecture the default grid size of 8 will be inappropriate. As a level designer myself I have found that with a very long or tall level a grid size of 8 blends in with the brushes forming a white blur. To make this easier to view change the grid size by clicking on the config tab at the base of the screen, then drag the draw grid size to the left or right depending on whether you wish to make the grid smaller or larger respectively.

Snap grid setting

Often, creating a level simply using the default grid makes the level look very uniform and it becomes boring. As an editor becomes more experienced he or she likes to do more complex looking items. These items often involve irregularly alligned objects or smaller brushes than the default snap size allows. Another place where the default snap size is often too large is when you are copying or attempting to mirror a room or group of rooms, in order to align them correctlyit is necessary to make the snap size smaller, or so somply make the snap size "1" (has the effect of totally removing the snap size, in other words you are moving/resizing objects "freehand" without the aid of a grid.) To do this in QOOLE go to the config tab and drag the Snap Grid slidebar to the left to make the snap grid smaller, or to the right to make the snap grid larger.

Texture Bookmarks

This feature speeds up editing by storing a list of your most often used (or simply your favourite) textures, and by making these textures close to hand, infact they are only one key away from selection.

QOOLE has the ability to store a list of 8 textures, you assign a texture to a bookmark, then switch to a bookmarked texture by simply pressing the key representing that bookmark (numeric keys 1-9.) To assign a texture to a bookmark, select the texture in the texture window, then hit the bookmark button, this will bring up the texture bookmark dialog box (right) Select to which number you wish to store it under by clicking set beneath the number you choose. hide the texture dialog box, now you can switch quickly to that texture by hitting the number which the texture was stored under. As you can see from this pic I was making a dungeon type scene, so I had a few simple textures bookmarked for easy reach. If you forget which texture you assigned to which number you can simply switch to the bookmarks window and refresh your memory.
